The Legacy Trail, a multi-use cycling walking roller-blading you name it trail is one of the most popular recreational amenities in Sarasota County. In 2005 Sarasota County completed the almost $12M purchase of 12.5 miles of the former CSX Railroad right of way from Clark Rd in Sarasota to the Historic Venice Train Depot where it connects to the Venetian Waterway Park. From there you can continue south either to Shamrock Park on the east side of the waterway or Casperson Beach on the west side.
The Trail is currently being extended all the way to Payne Park in downtown Sarasota, and a connector is underway to link to the City of North Port via Border Rd and then along the boundary of the Carlton Reserve.
Major Legacy Trail Milestones
Just the acquisition of the rights of way for the Legacy Trail was an accomplishment in itself, but the Trail needed some improvements to make it safer for everyone as the Trail passes a number of major roadways, including US41 in Venice. An overpass was funded and built to cross the highway that is six lanes wide at that point. An additional overpass was built over Laurel Rd in Nokomis, and additional overpasses are planned and being built at Clark and Bee Ridge Rd in Sarasota.
Things To See And Do Along The Legacy Trail
In it’s lengthy journey from Sarasota to South Venice, the Legacy Trail passes through some pristine natural areas, including Oscar Scherer State Park where there is Trail access from within the Park. Another highlight is at the Historic Venice Train Depot where a museum featuring vintage rail cars and the original depot where the Ringling Brothers Circus would offload all the animals and equipment during their winter layovers in Venice. There is also a very nice boat launch area there as well.
Water Water Water. The Legacy Trail crosses some amazing water views on the section from Laurel Rd in Nokomis to Casperson Beach in Venice. The original railroad trestles across Dona Bay and Bird Bay in Nokomis were rebuilt and offer some great views. The original railroad trestle that crosses South Creek in Oscar Scherer State Park was preserved in it’s original form as an interesting look back into history!
